My favourite wine...

Over the last number of weeks I have done many wine tastings and wine evenings around the country.  It’s been fun meeting everyone on Friday and Saturday evenings, at last count we have tasted wine with just over 300 people in two months!  One of the questions I’ve been asked a number of times as our tasting concludes is “What is your favourite wine?”  Both on the occasions of the question being asked and indeed in consideration of the same question right now I find myself struggling for a single answer or bottle of wine.

The fact that my job is also my hobby & passion gives me such an opportunity to

try great wines and so many various styles, some expensive fine wines but in truth predominately inexpensive value for money offerings.  Can I pick a favourite – still no! But I do have some favourite wine styles that I really enjoy.  Pinot Noir – light and delicate examples, usually from New Zealand.  Full bodied oaky Chardonnays (Californian at the moment) & tangy Rieslings – Australia.  Also bubbles and fizz – well no one ever refuses a glass of bubbles!!  Obviously all of our palates, taste and preferences will change depending on our mood and also the occasion.  What I do think is very important here, and I said this at the tastings, is to be careful not to put yourself into a particular box.  Try, test, explore and discover new wines whenever you have the chance.  Do expect to be disappointed occasionally (after all we each have different palates and there are so many different wines), but on the flip side when you find a real gem of a wine it will be such a terrific discovery and a real treat.  Think about the flavours and aromas you enjoy from your favourite wine styles and communicate this with the team at your local wine store – they will enjoy nothing more than guiding you through the extensive ranges they have available.

Don’t hold back and next time you shop – pick up something different, expand your palate!
